Getting Started in Sports Photography
The talk that Michael will deliver for us is about how to get started in sports photography and provides examples of what works and what doesn’t.
The first half of the talk sets out the key principles and is illustrated with photographs of football, cricket and basketball.
During the second half, he will cover about four or five sports chosen by the Camera Club that are available locally and therefore easily accessible to club members.
Biography
I have been taking photographs for most of my life. My Father was an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and I spent many happy hours with him in his darkroom when I was growing up. He was my inspiration.
I have been taking photographs more seriously since Autumn 2016 and now specialise in photographing sport and music, but also enjoy travel and street photography. Based near Salisbury, I am one of the house photographers at The Joiners music venue in Southampton, and have photographed regularly for Hampshire Cricket Club, Salisbury Football Club and Druids Lodge Polo Club. I have photographed almost 40 different sports and am always looking for new opportunities.
For many years I have been a Nikon DSLR user, but in 2020 I sold all my Nikon kit and changed to Sony mirrorless. I now use two Sony A9IIs and my lenses are the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II; 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II; 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS; and 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS. For more about my move to Sony, read my article on “Defecting from Nikon to Sony”.
I am an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS); and, while no longer a member, I have been an Associate of both the Society of International School & Events Photographers (ASISEP) and the Society of International Sport & Leisure Photographers (ASISLP).
I have photographed a wide range of sporting events, musical concerts and plays – for clubs, venues and schools. My images endeavour to portray the atmosphere and emotion of an event, not just record what happens. The aim is for the viewer to feel as though they were at the event. Having photographed almost 40 sports, I have built up a wealth of experience and I love passing that on to photographers who are new to sports photography or who just want to improve what they are doing.

Presentation: From iPhoneography to Fellowship: My Continuing Journey – Viveca Koh
TIME: 7:30pmDATE: Wed 15th July 2026
VENUE: Kennet Valley Hall
Presenter: Viveca Koh

'From iPhoneography to Fellowship: My Continuing Journey'
My second presentation follows on from my first – ‘Urban Exploration to Fine Art: A Photographic Journey’ – in which I will discuss my use of an iPhone to take photographs, leading up to the separate challenge of attaining Fellowship with The Royal Photographic Society using illustrations from a book of poetry and prose entitled ‘Star Blossom’, in which my images become more abstract and in some cases a little surreal, utilising multiple layers, textures and double exposures, whilst using the written words as inspiration.
Biography
I am a self-taught Fine Art photographer, with a special fascination for small details, for lost, abandoned, poignant and generally broken objects, and also for darkness contrasting with light, both in a physical and emotional sense.
Abandoned buildings are a passion of mine, as are the details of places that attract my eye, the minutiae which collects in hidden corners, the small parts of bigger things that are fascinating in their own right. I enhance many of my photographs with texture layers and overlays, experimenting with digital double exposure,
using old documents that I have collected to add a different dimension to the work in question.
I attained Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society in 2014 in the Visual Art genre, following on from my previous distinctions of ARPS and LRPS.
In 2021 I achieved Fellowship of The Irish Photographic Federation, and in 2024 a second FRPS in the Contemporary genre.
I am an LRPS Panel Member and Visual Art Panel Member, assessing all three levels of RPS distinctions in these categories.
I have exhibited in a number of venues, and many of my photographs are sold via my website as signed numbered Limited Edition Giclée Fine Art prints.

Presentation: Photographing Dartmoor – Julian Baird

'Photographing Dartmoor'
Biography
I'm a landscape photographer who has been exploring and creating inspiring images of Dartmoor for over 10 years. I'm the creator of the acclaimed video series "Discovering Dartmoor," and I share the stories behind the photographs I capture on my blog and YouTube channel. Additionally, as an experienced photography tutor and location guide, I help other photographers discover Dartmoor's amazing locations and create their own compelling compositions.
I was fortunate enough to spend much of my life in Scotland where I was surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. My experiences as a child growing up in the highlands and later as someone who loved hillwalking and cycling, has helped me develop a passion for the outdoors.
However, it wasn't until I moved to Devon and I purchased my first digital SLR camera that I started to appreciate how amazing the landscape around me was and that the photographs that I shared with the world had the power to inspire and evoke a sense of awe. It was soon after that I decided to become a landscape photographer.
These days you'll find me wandering Dartmoor or exploring the Cornish coast, or occasionally I'll be back in the homeland walking in the highlands of Scotland. As you might imagine I often see some of the most dramatic landscapes in the UK and I am driven to photograph and to tell stories about them. That drive often means early mornings or long days, but armed with a camera, a flask of coffee and a real sense of adventure there is no other place I would rather be. My passion for these locations is at the heart of my landscape photography, the videos I produce and the tuition I provide.
If I were to define my photographic style, I’m what you might call a classic or traditional landscape photographer. My photography is very much influenced by my local area of Dartmoor, so I shoot a lot of open views and moorland. Though I typically like my photographs to have lots of contrast and colour, I take a light hand to image editing. I want my photographs to be exciting, but genuine. Most of all I want them to inspire people to explore the great outdoors.
